Risnjak National Park
The Risnjak mountain range is named after a rare animal that inhabits its woods – the lynx. It is located in Gorski Kotar, a fascinating region in Croatia filled with mountains and dense forests. The national park includes both the Risnjak and Snježnik ranges and the source area of the Kupa River which is beyond doubt one of the most beautiful places in Gorski Kotar. This natural phenomenon is one of the deepest and strongest sources in Croatia, which remains a mystery for scientists. The Kupa flows through a picturesque valley, also known as the Enchanted butterfly valley - more than 500 species of butterflies inhabit the area! Another highlight of Risnjak National Park is its highest mountain peak „Big Risnjak“ which offers a magnificent view over the Adriatic Sea, other peaks of Gorski Kotar and even the Alps.
The Kupa River forms a natural border between Croatia and Slovenia. It springs from a karstic well at the Park's lowest point, forming a turquoise pond some 200 m long and 30 m wide. The Kupa River source is one of many unsolved karst riddles, one of the most powerful, most extended and deepest Croatian wellsprings. 321 metres above sea level, the shaped water mass of the turquoise green and blue lake will enchant you by its appearance.
During your visit to the Risnjak National Park the Leska Educational path should not be missed. It has been projected and created in such a way as to deal with each visitor passing through it individually.
A series of 23 information tables, brought together on just 4.2 km footpath are a great way to get to know the natural and cultural heritage of the national park.
The Risnjak massif clearly emerges from the green mountain forests thanks to its rocks and geological forms. Beautiful views which extend from 1528 m above sea level over the Kvarner Bay, Istria and the Julian Alps in the neighbouring country of Slovenia will make you want to stay longer. You can enjoy a warm tea or even stay overnight in Schlosser’s mountain hut situated 100m below the peak. It is probably one of the most beautiful mountain huts in Croatia.
Snjeznik is another rocky peak in Risnjak National Park surrounded by mountain meadows. The plants of this area are adapted to the most difficult climate conditions and tolerate without any difficulties the summer’s boiling heat and the severe cold and wind. You shouldn't miss out on a magnificent view that extends from the lookout at 1506 metres above sea level.
