Bear Mountain Trout River
Zagreb, Croatia

Huck Finn 8 days/7 nights trip

Medvednica ("The Bear Mountain“), which embraces Croatia’s capital city Zagreb, is a unique example of an almost fully preserved natural environment just outside a large city. The mountain is covered by dense forests of beech, oak, and chestnut. Our base for this multi-activity holiday is in Medvednica Nature Park, close to the peak. We will explore the region cycling / biking, walking / hiking and canoeing / kayaking, visit Plitvice Lakes National Park and explore the beautiful Mreznica River.

Kayaking / canoeing Mreznica river

Apartment hotel Snježna kraljica ("Snow queen") is situated close to the peak of Mount Medvednica, in the very vicinity of the ski slopes. It has seventeen modern apartments with open fireplaces for romantic atmosphere. The restaurant offers old, nearly forgotten home-made Croatian specialities in its mountaineering atmosphere. Snježna kraljica also offers extra facilities for relaxation: fitness, sauna and whirlpool-jacuzzi.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Sat: Arrival in Zagreb

Arrival in Croatia. A Huck Finn guide will be waiting for you at Zagreb airport, bus or train station. You will be transferred to your accommodation in Medvednica Nature Park. After settling into your appartment, meet the other members of the group over dinner and discuss the upcoming holiday with your guide.

Day 2 - Sun: Cycling / biking and canoeing / kayaking in the Mreznica River area

After breakfast we will head to the Mreznica, a river known for its clear, warm, emerald waters and numerous waterfalls. We'll take a well-paced Cycling / biking tour through villages and along country roads, meandering past numerous small family farms and homesteads. There are great places to take breaks along the road and observe the valleys and fields. The day will be filled with swimming, jumping off the waterfalls, canoeing / kayaking and enjoying beautiful nature. You will be able to go for a refreshing swim in the river and enjoy a picnic lunch on the bank.

Day 3 - Mon: Cycling / biking Medvednica Nature Park

Many trails and roads in Medvednica Nature Park are perfect for cycling / biking. We will explore beautiful forest paths, observe the rich plant and animal world and visit interesting cultural monuments, witnesses to a great history dating from prehistoric times when first human settlements appeared.

Day 4 - Tue: "500 steps“ walking / hiking in Stubica

Mount Medvednica is a favorite walking / hiking destination for the inhabitants and visitors of Zagreb region. There are many walking / hiking trails, but one place that deserves special attention is on northern slopes of the mountain. 500 stone steps ("Horvatove stube“) that were constructed in 1946 by a Zagreb mountaineer Vladimir Horvat and his associates lead through a landscape of forests and offer great views over the countryside. We will explore the mountain on foot, visit the cave Medvednica and have time for a break in one of the excursion sites.

Day 5 - Wed: Downhill cycling / biking to Maksimir Park and rowing

What better way to enjoy a cycling / biking tour than going downhill. We will start from our hotel and bike towards the foot of the mountain and Zagreb city. Our goal is Maksimir, the oldest public park in Europe. Maksimir is to Zagreb as Bois de Boulogne is to Paris, Tiergarten to Berlin or Regents Park to London. It represents a shelter for many plant and animal species, especially because of its preserved hundred-year-old oak forests. Once in Maksimir, you can relax by the lake, row in open canoes or visit the Zagreb Zoo which is a part of the Park. The van will take us back to our hotel late in the afternoon.

Day 6 – Thu: Relax in the woods. Optional trips.

Today you can be as active or as lazy as you wish. You can relax in the forest, walk around the mountain, visit Zagreb or even take another optional cycling / bliking tour on your own. Several optional trips will be proposed, in case you are keen on discovering more beauties Croatia has to offer.

Day 7 - Fri: Cycling / biking and walking / hiking in Plitvice Lakes National Park

Early in the morning we start our ride through lovely countryside roads towards Plitvice Lakes, the first Croatian national park. Once at Plitvice, we have the day to explore it on foot and by bike. Plitvice Lakes National Park is a spectacular geological and hydrogeological karst phenomenon, a sequence of sixteen turquoise lakes linked together with cascading falls and travertine pools. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife. The richness of flora and fauna attracts visitors and scientists from all over the world. UNESCO has declared it with all rights as a World Natural Heritage site. We’ll pass through the Park following narrow paths and crossing over wooden bridges.

Day 8 - Sat: Departure day

Depart from Zagreb for the airport and flight home. You are welcome to schedule your homeward transport for any time. If you decide to spend more time in Croatia, our guides will be happy to recommend other beautiful places to visit - especially those you won’t find in tourist guide books.
