Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Korana village

Leaving Zagreb, Zadar or Rijeka airport behind, we make our way to the tiny village of Korana, located in a picture-perfect riverside setting near Plitvice Park. Here we have a unique opportunity to spend a week with local residents in their private guesthouses. After settling into your accommodation, we will meet in the river-side hacienda for a welcome drink and brief orientation, where we will have the chance to discuss the upcoming holiday and get to know our fellow travelers..

Meals: D; Van ride: 2 hours one way.

Day 2 Plitvice Lakes National Park walking

We start our day walking along the wooden paths and bridges in and around Plitvice Lakes, Croatia's premier national park. Its exquisite series of 16 emerald green and opal blue travertine lakes, more than 90 waterfalls and numerous caves make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in the pure, untouched nature. A panoramic boat and train ride will take us back to the start. Later in the afternoon we return to Korana village just in time to enjoy a swim in the clear river just in front of your house.

Meals: B and D (picnic lunch on your own); Walking: 4-6 miles; Terrain: easy, well marked paths.

Day 3 Cycling in Plitvice Lakes Area

Today is all about exploring the lovely pastoral Croatian countryside by bike. We cycle on nearly traffic free roads through forests, between hills and across green fields. We will have time for a picnic lunch and time to relax outdoors. In the afternoon we bike back to Korana Village in time to enjoy a traditional Croatian evening meal.

Meals: B and D (picnic lunch on your own); Cycling: 4 hours; Terrain: rolling hills. (Please note that cycling the entire route may be too difficult for small children, but the support van can pick them up and take them back to the village if they are tired.)

Day 4 Kayaking in the Mreznica River canyon

We return to the river this morning in the upper Mreznica canyon. Our route takes us from the hotel to a point approximately 45 minutes away where we’ll start our expedition into the canyon. We travel through a gorge so narrow and deep that the sun enters for only a few hours each day, around noon, creating spectacular light effects. Paddling past cliffs of carved white rocks, lush vegetation and cascading waterfalls, we will arrive at a strong freshwater spring. We continue our journey to the second highest waterfall on the Mreznica (8m), a magical place ideal for swimming and a picnic. After a break, we continue and finish the adventure and finally return to the hotel in the late afternoon.

Meals: B and D (picnic lunch on your own); Kayaking: class II-III, moderate, 4 - 5 hours; Drive: 45 min each way. Please note that in case of very low water levels the trip can only be done downstream - in that case the duration of kayaking is 2-3 hours. In case of high water levels we use rafting boats (2 hours of rafting).

Day 5 Optional trip day

For those who chose a 5-day trip, this is the end of your holiday. You are welcome to schedule your homeward transport for any time.
The rest of the group continues the trip. On the fifth day of your holiday you can be as active or as lazy as you want. You can relax by the river, swim or even take another optional cycling tour on your own in and around Plitvice Lakes National Park. Several river, walking, sightseeing or beach trips will be offered, in case you are keen on discovering more beauties that Croatia has to offer.

Meals: B and D (lunch on your own); Van ride: max 2 hours one way.

Day 6 Velebit Mountain hiking

Today we go south and spend the day hiking in the Velebit Nature and National Parks area. You will enjoy a beautiful hike in pristine, unspoiled nature that will leave you feeling healthy and refreshed, and there will probably be time for a swim in the warm Adriatic before returning to Korana Village for dinner. There are several hiking itineraries to choose from, and our guides will select the one that is best adapted to group abilities.

Meals: B and D (picnic lunch on your own); Van ride: 2h one way; Walking: moderate, 4 hours.

Day 7 Una River Rafting

The Una River forms a natural border between Croatia and Bosnia. It will steal your heart with its beauty, green clear water and a landscape of dense forests. The Una is rich in water even in summer so rafting is possible all year round. There are several sections to choose from, and our guides will select the one that is best adapted to group abilities and current water levels.

Meals: B and D (picnic lunch on your own); Van ride: 1h one way; Rafting: class I-III, 2-3 hours.

Day 8 Departure

Depart Korana village for the airport and flight home. You are welcome to schedule your homeward transport for any time. If you decide to spend more time in Croatia, our guides will be happy to recommend other beautiful places to visit - especially those you won’t find in tourist guide books.

Meals: B; Van drive: 2 hours one way.

Reviews

We did the five-day version of the Land of Waterfalls trip and would recommend it.
I especially enjoyed the rafting in Bosnia. It rained heavily on one day, and our guides (Nikolas and Ana) were very chilled out and accommodating. None of us particularly wanted to get on a bicycle in the rain so instead we visited a bear sanctuary and flour mill. We enjoyed staying in a small, peaceful, beautiful local village.
Evenings consisted of fantastic outdoor meals and good chats with the other members of our tour group over local liquors. I also really enjoyed the history talk given by our guide Nikolas before dinner one evening. The history of Croatia is obviously very complex and turbulent so it was informative to hear it from a local person.

I was met at Zagreb airport by the lovely Arena, and we all drove to the beautiful Korana Village, where we were settled into our accommodation.
Our accommodation hosts Marko and his wife and daughter were so kind and generous.
The activities throughout the week were fun, exciting, challenging, awesome, and very well organised and safe. The group itself was the best - thank you everyone - and the food was homemade, traditional and delicious, eaten as we sat by the fire in the evenings and laughed about the day's adventures.
Both of our guides - Irena and Ana were very friendly, attentive, thoughtful, organised and fun! I would recommend this trip to everyone who has a sense of adventure, wants to see some of the Croatian countryside and its culture and who likes water!
Go for it!

I signed up for this trip really late, and Huck Finn went out their way to accommodate me - very impressed with the organisation.
I'm SO glad I did this, it was the highlight of my holiday in Croatia.
Great group of likeminded people, so well organised and hosted by Irena and Ana (who were truly "The Dream Team"), awesome activities (the Una river rafting just fantastic), delicious local food (and plum brandy!), wonderful village accommodation.
There's nothing I would change and I can't recommend this more highly. Be aware that the activities really are quite "active" and you'll need a moderate level of fitness - which suited me perfectly - but not for those thinking it's a Sunday stroll in the park.

We thoroughly enjoyed Huck Finn's Land of Waterfalls.
We would recommend it to anyone interested in a week of varied activities (hiking, rafting, kayaking, biking, walking), while experiencing different parts of beautiful Croatia.
Korana Village is idyllic and the meals were delicious.
The guides are very friendly and accommodating and have a deep knowledge of the activities and the local areas. They take good care of you from the moment you are greeted at the airport to the moment it is time to say goodbye. If it happens to rain during your stay, they will even lend you a rain coat.
Overall a fantastic experience. Would love to do it again!!

Cannot recommend this company enough!
You stay in beautiful villages, eat genuine Croatian fare, and canoe down (and up!) some of the most breathtaking gorges and rivers. What really makes it special is the care and fun provided by the Huck Finn leaders - in our case Stefan and Ivan.
Nothing is too much trouble for these guys!
The land of waterfalls trip is busy, fun, and challenging. Lots of people in our group were patiently encouraged to face their fears - be it jumping off 8 metre waterfalls, or rafting down them!
Thank you Huck Finn for some great memories and hopefully some new friends.

This was my third trip to Croatia with Huck Finn, and I had an amazing time!
The weather was perfect and all the recent rain meant the river activities were awesome!
Both guides were fantastic and as usual nothing was too much trouble... Food was excellent too. I was so inspired by the white water activities that I'm now on the lookout for a white water kayak, though UK rivers just can't compare with what there is in beautiful Croatia!

We went to Croatia in September 2012 and had an amazing time with Huck Finn!
We spent a few days in the Dubrovnik area first. Kajakking, Dubrovnik visit, more kajakking, visiting the islands, it was wonderful!
The guides took us to some of the places you don't get to visit as a "regular" tourist. We went to one of the islands before the shore and it was honestly, some of the most beautiful nature that I have ever seen. The colors of the trees, and the water were unbelievable. We had lunch at a local restaurant that had the best fish I've ever had. Fresh from out of the water. We spent a few hours on a deserted beach, with a beautiful view on the islands! After a few days we went to the Plitvice lake area, which was, if possible, even more beautiful than the Dubrovnik area.
Our guide Zejlka was supernice. We had a ton of fun with her and she really listened to what we wanted to do and what we wanted to visit. We spent a day at the Plitvice National park, we went biking, we visited the caves in the area, we went rafting, ...
All of it was absolutely amazing.
We went swimming in the river, and jumped off waterfalls. It's defenitely a holiday that will stick with me for many years to come. Croatia is so beautiful, and I will defenitely go back and book with Huck Finn again. The guides are all really friendly and really fun! They make your holiday one to never forget!
I would recommend it to anyone!
