Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 - Sat: Arrival in Zagreb
Arrival in Croatia. A Huck Finn guide will be waiting for you at Zagreb airport, bus or train station. You will be transferred to your accommodation in Samobor town. After settling into your room, meet the other members of the group over dinner and discuss the upcoming holiday with your guide.
Day 2 - Sun: Cycling / biking and walking / hiking Samobor
Our first activity day starts with cycling / biking towards the mountain surrounding the town. Once we reach the foot of the mountain, we will explore it walking / hiking. It is a part of Zumberak-Samobor Highlands - an area that certainly deserves the “title” of Nature Park for its natural beauty and its tradition. It is a hilly territory situated southwest of Zagreb, with an elevation range from 180 to 1,178 meters. An exclusively rural area, there is not a single town in the Nature Park.
Day 3 - Mon: Cycling / biking and walking / hiking Zumberak
Back on our bikes to explore another part of Zumberak-Samobor Highlands Nature Park. We will head to Mount Zumberak, which we will explore walking / hiking. The highest peak is Sveta Gera, situated on the border between Croatia and Slovenia.
Day 4 - Tue: Cycling / biking and Sava River rafting
Today we will take our bikes and head toward the Sava River which flows through the Croatian capital city. In the past, ferries and floats connecting two sides of the river were used by the citizens of Zagreb as an important mean of transport. Our goal is to keep this tradition alive. Rafting on the Sava starts at a ferry crossing, with one of the rare ferries that is functional today. We will learn how the system works and start our rafting/floating trip. The finish point is a popular restaurant by the river, where you can taste local specialities and relax.
Day 5 - Wed: Canoeing / kayaking on the Odra River
The Odra is a river near Zagreb, well known for the exceptional diversity of plants and animals, many of which are protected species. The best way to explore it is by canoeing / kayaking. At the end of the excursion we will have time to visit Zagreb, the Croatian capital.
Day 6 – Thu: Cycling / biking and canoeing / kayaking on the Mreznica River
After breakfast we will head to the Mreznica, a river 1 hour's drive from Samobor, known for its clear, warm, emerald waters and numerous waterfalls. We'll take a well-paced biking / cycling tour through villages and along country roads, meandering past numerous small family farms and homesteads. There are great places to take breaks along the road and look out over the valleys and fields. The day will be filled with swimming, jumping off the waterfalls, canoeing / kayaking and enjoying beautiful nature. You will be able to go for a refreshing swim in the river and enjoy a picnic lunch on the bank.
Day 7 - Fri: Cycling / biking and walking / hiking in Plitvice Lakes National Park
Early in the morning we start our ride through lovely countryside roads towards Plitvice Lakes, the first Croatian national park. Once at Plitvice, we have the day to explore it on foot and by bike. The Park is a spectacular geological and hydrogeological karst phenomenon, a sequence of sixteen turquoise lakes linked together with cascading falls and travertine pools. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife. The richness of flora and fauna attracts visitors and scientists from all over the world. UNESCO has declared it with all rights as a World Natural Heritage site. We’ll pass through the Plitvice Lakes National Park following narrow paths and crossing over wooden bridges.
Day 8 - Sat: Departure day
Depart from Zagreb for the airport and flight home. You are welcome to schedule your homeward transport for any time. If you decide to spend more time in Croatia, our guides will be happy to recommend other beautiful places to visit - especially those you won’t find in tourist guide books.
Note on the itinerary:
