Every few years in fitness, there are new inventions. Some last long while others (Ab Lounge anyone?) are shortlived. When it comes to SUP Yoga, it looks like it’s here to stay.

So what exactly is SUP Yoga? Simply put, it is the art of performing yoga while standing and balancing on a paddleboard. The sport combines different yoga types such as Hatha or Vinyasa yoga and outdoors, usually in calm waters such as lakes. Yoga has its roots in India, while paddleboarding is believed to originate from Hawaii. The two combined became huge trend in America, and now you can easily spot it around Croatia too.

If you are looking for a challenge and something new and fresh in general, we would be glad to give you some of the reasons we think SUP yoga is awesome.

Since the platform is unstable, you will have to work harder and focus more on the water while doing yoga poses. The more often you do it, the sooner will you build core strength (much faster than practicing yoga on a regular mat). Balance is the key in SUP yoga and your core strength plays a very important role.

Every time you fall, you will need to get up in order to continue. It teaches you one of the most valuable life lessons: it’s absolutely okay to fall as long as you are willing to get up every time. And with each fall you will become more confident and balancing will become easier, all while conquering the fear of falling.

Sort of like a meditation, SUP yoga makes you focus on the present moment. By the time you catch yourself wandering about your grocery lists, job tasks and meeting schedules, you will be in the water already. Calm your mind, focus on the movement and you are good to go.

There is something truly empowering about standing on the water overlooking the horizon, breathing the fresh air and rejuvenating in the water afterwards. It is something a person should indulge in as often as possible, or at least while on vacation. The feeling is truly exceptional. In case these reasons weren’t enough, here is our final attempt…

SUP Yoga is so much fun! Forget about calmness, focus or empowerment when trying it for the first time. Because all you are really going to do is laugh your butt off. Accept that you will most likely look like an uncoordinated penguin. The thing is, you are not going to master it overnight, so just enjoy and have FUN.

Nothing beats good ol’ stretching, vitamin D, fresh breeze and beautiful nature, so this summer we hope you will give it a try.
