Cycling Tour of Istria
Istrian Peninsula is the premier Croatian cycling region offering a great mixture of nature, activity, culture and history. Some routes follow the coast but most are inland between charming old towns, villages, farms, forests and hills including Mt. Risnjak National Park and Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Porec, one of Istria’s most renowned tourist destinations, manages to balance the authentic charm of a small coastal town filled with magnificent historical sites, with the perks and exciting features modern and active travelers expect. Spread across 37 km of stunning coastline, Porec Riviera is surrounded by untouched nature suited to every taste. The city of Porec offers a wealth of amazing historical sites. As you walk down the old Roman streets, turn back the hands of time and step into the Decumanus, the Great Temple or the UNESCO protected Euphrasius’ basilica built in the 6th century and one of the most beautifully preserved works of Byzantium art.

Arrival in Porec
Porec is not far from the airports and harbors of Pula, Rijeka, Trieste and Venice. We will meet you at the airport, train/bus station or in the harbor and take you there (unless you travel by your own car). Our groups usually get together around mid-day which will give us enough time to choose and test the bicycles on a short tour through the old town. Before sunset we will meet for a welcome drink, dinner and brief orientation where we will have a chance to discuss the upcoming holiday and get to know our guides and fellow travelers.
Accommodation: Porec guesthouse; Meals: D.
Porec - Lim Bay Nature Reserve - Rovinj
The bicycles will take us from Porec into the countryside towards Lim Fjord Nature Reserve. Lim Bay, one of the most beautiful natural resources of Istria, is a 10 kilometer long estuary rich with sea life and vegetation. It is a protected marine and fishing reserve, as well as a protected landscape due to high flora diversity on a relatively narrow area which represents a unique phenomenon. The plant covering is lush and diverse, reaching from evergreen to deciduous trees, inhabited by wild animals such as boars, fox, deer and birds like hawks, buzzards and owls. After exploring this beautiful protected area we will head towards Rovinj. The old town of Rovinj situated on a small peninsula is a masterpiece of urban art and architecture. There will be time to enjoy a walk in the old town narrow streets, have a coffee, an ice cream or a swim.
Accommodation: Porec guesthouse; Meals: B, D; Cycling: easy/moderate, 4-5 hours.
Porec - Mirna River Valley
Today we are heading in the direction of the Mirna River whose fertile valley is well known among gourmets for its delicious white truffles. Before we reach the estuary we will be enjoying beautiful sea views and sea freshness, and then cycle along its winding flow which is, as its Croatian name suggests, calm and peaceful. Mirna River is 53 km long, which makes it the longest river in Istria. This inner part of Istria creates the atmosphere of serenity and complete union with the lush nature.
Accommodation: Porec guesthouse; Meals: B, D; Cycling: easy/moderate, 3-4 hours.
Oprtalj - Groznjan - Motovun
The Istrian Peninsula is well known for its coast but the real treasures are inland. Typical Istrian towns were built on top of the hills, vineyards, fields and forests which are very pleasant for touring on a bike. We leave Porec by passenger van with all our luggage and drive to the countryside. The cycling tour includes Oprtalj and Groznjan, charming hillside towns where we will have time for a short walk and exploring. We will get the chance to cycle the Parenzana, old rail road nowdays known as a mecca for cyclists. Slowly traveling down to Mirna River Valley we will be enjoying magnificent views of the countryside. Since the picturesque hillside town of Motovun is just a short ride away, there will be an option for an afternoon coffee and walk along its walls before we retire in our accommodation.Today we cycle on roads with very little or no car traffic and most of the time downhill or flat sections.
Accommodation: Motovun; Meals: B, D; Cycling: easy/moderate: 3-4 hours.
Draguc & Sovinjak
For those who chose a 5-day trip, this is the end of your holiday. You are welcome to schedule your homeward transport for any time. The rest of the group continues the trip.
Today we explore the inner Istria, starting our journey in Draguc. Located on the top of the hill, this village will immediately capture your heart with its ancient history and friendly local people. Because of the many films that have been filmed here, and movie stars who walked in its streets, some people named it the Istrian Hollywood. Our bikes will then take us to Sovinjak, another charming Istrian village with a very picturesque view of the Mirna Valley. This village sometimes seems so peaceful that it makes you want to whisper.
Accommodation: Motovun; Meals: B, D; Cycling: easy/moderate: 3-4hours.
Cycling Risnjak National Park
Today we shall explore Risnjak National Park whose cycling routes will take you through a landscape of forests, hills, meadows, mountain streams and rivers. There is very little car traffic on these paved roads and the atmosphere is very peaceful, friendly and romantic. Cool and very different from the one of the nearby Adriatic Sea, ideal for escaping the summer heats and crowds. The pristine park covers an area of 63,5 km2 including Risnjak and Snjeznik ranges, as well as the source area of the Kupa River which is one of the most beautiful places in Gorski Kotar mountain region. The Kupa River forms a natural border between Croatia and Slovenia. It springs from a karstic well at the Park’s lowest point, forming a turquoise pond some 200 m long and 30 m wide. This natural phenomenon is one of the deepest and strongest river sources in Croatia and remains a mystery to the scientists. The Kupa flows through a picturesque valley, also known as the mysterious valley of butterflies – more than 500 species of butterflies are found in the area! We will start cycling towards Razloge, a little village above the Kupa River source. The route leads through small villages and forest paths, where the fresh clean air will renew your senses. Once in Razloge, we’ll descend to the Kupa source and enjoy a picnic at this magical spot. After the break, back on the road along the river. The bridge crossing the Cabranka River is also a border crossing to Slovenia. After a short passport procedure, we will bike along the Slovenian bank of the green Kupa River to Brod where we will cross back to Croatia.
Accommodation: Zvecaj Village 3* Hotel; Meals: B,D; Cycling: easy/moderate, 4-5 hours.
Mreznica River or optional Plitvice Lakes NP
There are many trails in the Mreznica area to choose from. We will start from the hotel and meander past numerous small family farms and homesteads. There are great places to take breaks along the road and look out over the valleys and fields. You will be able to go for a swim in the river and enjoy a picnic lunch on the bank. Those who still want to explore the area after the tour are free to bike to other places of interests on their own, with directions given by the guide. Optionally, you can choose to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park, the oldest Croatian national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Accommodation: Zvecaj Village 3*Hotel; Meals: B, D; Cycling: 3 hours, easy/moderate.
Depart to the airport and flight home. You are welcome to schedule your homeward transport for any time. If you decide to spend more time in Croatia, our guides will be happy to recommend other beautiful places to visit – especially those you won’t find in tourist guidebooks.
